Rae Carter is an interdisciplinary artist and illustrator living and working in San Diego, CA. Born in South Dakota, growing up moving across the American South with their family, and later up and down the East Coast during their six-year Naval career, Rae developed an early comfort with movement, adaptability, and reinvention. This upbringing has fostered an instinct to explore, carrying into their studio practice, where they work across painting, collage, ceramics, digital illustration, and textiles. Their physical work frequently centers on themes of identity, memory, and the slippery space where nostalgia meets personal mythmaking. Rae is especially interested in how “home” can exist as both a physical place through objects and an internal landscape along with how it shifts, fractures, or reforms the as one moves through the world.In addition to their artistic practice, Rae works professionally as an art handler and preparator, experiences that have helped sharpen their sensitivity to the materiality, craft, display, and the care of objects. This behind-the-scenes perspective on art, how it’s built, moved, installed, and preserved, continues to inform their own creative approach, grounding their experimentation in a deep respect for process of how others come to experience art.
